André Trindade / Filipa Cordeiro, Verão Eterno, 2013, video still
André Trindade and Filipa Cordeiro (Portugal, 1981/1988) explore erudite culture combined with lo-fi and popular culture with history as a background, creating clashes between purist ideas derived from Modernism and the scatological ethos in B movies.
Verão Eterno (Endless Summer) is a project by Trindade and Cordeiro that was created during a six-month stay in the city of Santa Cruz de Cabrália, a small Brazilian town near Porto Seguro, Bahia. The exhibition at Lumiar Cité consists of a video installation, a sculpture and a cassette tape with the soundtrack of the movie. The video tells a story inspired by European migration to Brazil in recent years, cross-referenced with the notion of a journey into paradise. It is about escapism, about life on the edge of capitalism. It is a lo-fi science fiction tale about life and the search for contentment between exile and utopia.
André Trindade (Oeiras, 1981) lives and works in Torres Vedras. He received his Degree in Sculpture from the Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa and participated in the Maumaus Independent Study Programme. He was shortlisted for the EDP Novas Artistas Prize and the Fidelidade Mundial Jovens Pintores Prize, receiving honorable mentions in both. He has presented his work in exhibitions in various institutions including: Chiado 8, Museu da Electricidade, Lunds Konsthall (Sweden) and MACUF (Spain). The artistic residencies in which he has participated include: Programa de Residências de Artes Visuais da Galeria Zé dos Bois and the Residency Exchange Programme of the Allianz Foundation (Germany). In the field of publications of texts and projects by both Portuguese and foreign artists, he runs the curatorial project Dogma,
Filipa Cordeiro (Coimbra, 1988) lives and works in Lisbon. She received her Degree and Masters in Multimedia Arts from the Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. In 2013, she was selected for a Fulbright PhD Scholarship and she is currently studying for a Masters in General Philosophy at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In recent years she has worked as a production and research assistant at Oporto and at Galeria Zé dos Bois. She has participated in the Programa de Residências de Artes Visuais da Galeria Zé dos Bois and she collaborates frequently with André Trindade in the research and development of projects.
The project 'Verão Eterno' will be presented at Paços - Galeria Municipal (Torres Vedras), between 02/11/13 and 30/11/13, and at Espaço Campanhã (Porto), between 07/12/13 and 12/01/14.
